5 Fun Things to Do in NH This Weekend

Here's five unique local ideas that will help you enjoy the end of February vacation.

1. Make your own Irish beer! Incredibrew in Nashua is hosting a special day of brewing on Friday for all you beer-lovers out there. You'll brew up their best Irish brews:  Irish Dry Stout, Double Dublin, Irish Red Ale, and more.  Join them for a wee-bit of brewin' and return in 2 weeks (which just happens to be St. Patrick's Day), for bottling.  Everyone gets a variety case to take home. Fill a few pints and toast to good will and happiness. As an old Irish saying goes: "For every wound, a balm. For every sorrow, cheer. For every storm, a calm. For every thirst, a beer."

2. Watch smart students compete with robots! The FIRST Robotics Competition Granite State Regional will take place at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on March 2nd and 3rd! It will have teams from the area competing, including those from our own SAU #39 school district. The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) pairs high-school students with adult mentors (primarily engineers and teachers) to design and build robots that compete against one another in this high energy “varsity Sport for the Mind." Each year at the Kickoff in January, a new, challenging game is introduced. These exciting competitions combine the practical application of science and technology with the fun, intense energy and excitement of a championship-sporting event.

3. Listen to perfect harmony! Brother Sun with Greg Greenway will be performing at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry on Friday. Pat Wictor, Greg Greenway, and Joe Jencks have formed a dynamic new male trio. Their harmonies, as much as their lyrics, tell what they are about: warm as a campfire, stirring as a gospel church, rousing as a call to arms. Calling upon contemporary songwriting, and informed by the deep roots of gospel, blues, and folk, the trio weaves a tapestry of harmony that is brilliantly fresh and yet familiar.

4. Art and music combine! Music is a beautiful and powerful form of communication, and speaks to a variety of emotions and ideas. It is also the theme for the latest fine craft exhibition on display at the Gallery at The Craft Center and League of NH Craftsmen Headquarters. Music from Our Hands, which runs from January 13 through March 21, 2012, is a multi-media exhibition featuring the work of juried members of the League of NH Craftsmen  (a list appears at the end of this release). The exhibition features two electric guitars, three acoustic guitars, a sterling silver flute, a gourd, whistles, vase percussion, as well as other fine handcrafted pieces that include musical elements.

5. Get put under a spell...ing bee! The New Hampshire State Spelling Bee will be more exciting than ever this year as nearly 200 of the state’s top elementary and middle school spellers gather in our state’s Capitol to compete. The public is encouraged to attend this free event on Saturday, March 3rd at the Capitol Center for the Arts starting at 1 p.m. The student to emerge as the top speller will represent the Granite State at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in May.
