Four songwriters that have made millions from songs we've all heard on the radio countless times...yet most of us don't know their names.


Desmond Child

Notable Hits: 

  • "I Was Made for Lovin' You": co-written with Paul Stanley and Vini Poncia, a disco-infused hit for Kiss in 1979 as the fad started waning, from the album 'Dynasty'
  • "Heaven's on Fire": co-written with Paul Stanley, recorded by Kiss during their unmasked phase and released on their 1984 'Animalize' album.
  • "Livin' on a Prayer": Bon Jovi's signature song, "You Give Love a Bad Name" from 1986's 'Slippery When Wet'.  Both songs co-written with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
  • "Bad Medicine": co-written with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, the number one single from Bon Jovi's 1988 'New Jersey' album.
  • "Keep the Faith": co-written with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, the title track from Bon Jovi's 1992 album.
  • "Angel": co-written with Steven Tyler; a power ballad comeback hit for Aerosmith off their 1988 'Permanent Vacation'.  He also wrote "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" from the same record.
  • "What It Takes":" co-written with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry; a power ballad from Aerosmith's 1990 'Pump' album.
  • "I Hate Myself for Loving You": recorded by Joan Jett for her 1988 'Up Your Alley' album.
  • "Poison": co-written with John McCurry, recorded by Alice Cooper on his 1989 'Trash' record.
  • "Livin' La Vida Loca": co-written with Draco Rosa, a massive, international 1999 hit for Ricky Martin.
  • "Waking Up in Vegas": co-written with Andreas Carlsson and Katy Perry, a 2009 hit from Perry's album 'One Of The Boys'.

Notable Hits: 
  • "Hide Your Heart": co-written with Desmond Child and Paul Stanley, originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler for her 1988 album of the same name.  Strangely, also recorded by Kiss and by solo Ace Frehley solo in 1989: respectively 'Hot In Shade' and 'Trouble Walkin'.
  • "Hanging on a Heart Attack": recorded by Holly's short-lived pop rock band Device in 1986.
  • "The Warrior": co-written with Nick Gilder this was a hit for Scandal featuring Patty Smyth in 1984 from the album of the same name.
  • "Love Touch": co-written with Mike Chapman, this was recorded by Rod Stewart and used in the Legal Eagles Soundtrack as well as Stewart's 1986 album 'Every Beat of My Heart'.
  • "Change": a 1982 hit by John Waite featured on his 'Ignition' album and also used in the 1985 movie Vision Quest, but originally recorded by Spider (Holly's band).
  • "Better Be Good to Me": co-written with Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, made famous by Tina Turner in 1984 with her 'Private Dancer' record, the song was originally recorded by Spider.
  • "The Best": co-written with Mike Chapman this was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler for her 1988 'Hide Your Heart' album.  The song was breathed new life by Tina Turner in 1989 on her 'Foreign Affairs' album.
  • "Never": co-written by Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson and Greg Bloch, recorded by Heart for their self-titled 1985 mega-selling album.
  • "Love Is a Battlefield": co-written with Mike Chapman, Pat Benatar's highest charting single, from her 1983 'Live From Earth' album.
  • "Invincible": co-written with Simon Climie, recorded by Pat Benatar and used in the soundtrack for the movie The Legend Of Billie Jean and her album 'Seven The Hard Way' (1985).
  • "Obsession": co-written with Michael Des Barres, this 1983 hit for the new wave synth-pop band Animotion was ubiquitous for years.
  • "Rag Doll": co-written with Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Jim Vallance and recorded for Aerosmith's 1988 'Permanent Vacation' album.

Notable Hits: 
  • "Free Me": recorded by Roger Daltrey for the soundtrack of the 1980 movie in which he starred, McVicar.
  • "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You": originally recorded by Ballard's band Argent, in 1991 Kiss changed some lyrics, re-recorded it and renamed it "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II" for the movie soundtrack for Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
  • "I Know There's Something Going On": recorded by former-ABBA singer Frida on the 1982 Phil Collins-produced album 'Something's Going On'.
  • "I Surrender": recorded by Rainbow on the 1981 'Difficult To Cure' album.
  • "New York Groove": first recorded by British glam band Hello in 1975, but made famous by Ace Frehley on his first solo album in 1978.
  • "On the Rebound": originally recorded solo by Russ Ballard, it was remade by a retooled Uriah Heep for their 1982 'Abominog' album.
  • "Since You Been Gone": probably Ballard's most covered song, it was originally recorded by him in 1976, but also recorded by Head East, Rainbow, Clout, former Runaway lead singer Cherie Currie, Brian May and Impellitteri.
  • "Winning": also recorded by Ballard in 1976, it was remade by Santana for their 1981 'Zebop!' album.
  • "You Can Do Magic": recorded by America for their 1982 'View from the Ground' album.

Notable Hits:
  • “Alone”: recorded by Heart on their 1987 'Bad Animals' album.
  • “Like a Virgin”: their most prominent hit, this was a massive worldwide hit for Madonna in 1984 from the album of the same name.
  • “True Colors”: a hit from Cyndi Lauper's 1986 sophomore record of the same name, this has also been recorded by Phil Collins and Aztec Camera.
  • “Eternal Flame”: The Bangles chart-topping song, from their 1989 'Everything' album.
  • "I Drove All Night": originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1987, Cyndi Lauper made a hit out of it in 1989 on her album 'A Night To Remember'.
  • "I Touch Myself": co-written with the Divinyls, they charted with it in 1990 on their 1990 self-titled album.
  • "Sex as a Weapon": hit for Pat Benatar from her 1985 'Seven the Hard Way' record.
  • "I'll Stand By You": co-written with Chrissie Hynde for the Pretenders' 1994 'Last Of The Independents' album.  British girl group Girls Aloud topped the UK charts with their version in 2004.
