Future Energy Solutions are Needed Today

Green energy solutions are already here, and are ready to be implemented for both personal and state-wide use

One of New England’s growing problems is our lack of energy supply. There are no shortages of controversies around pipelines and transmission towers and where to build and not to build in New Hampshire but the more we argue and politic the less gets done.

One popular solution now is solar panels, and wind turbines whenever possible. Those are both fine solutions, and I wholeheartedly believe that the state government should do as much as possible to make solar panels affordable for every citizen in New Hampshire. However, this is New England, so solar panels are not enough. There are too many days where solar energy is not available due to an overcast or snow covering the panels, causing people to still rely on natural gas or oil a large part of the year.

One solution to the gap is to turn our focus on commonsense solutions that use tomorrow’s energy sources today. We currently have a nuclear facility here in New Hampshire at Seabrook that provides us with clean reliable energy year-round. We could begin having real discussions about expanding the site or building a new reactor somewhere else as a way to alleviate our overpriced electric bills. Despite what some critics say, nuclear energy is clean, safe, and efficient.

As long as there are people in New Hampshire and our population keeps growing, our energy supply will need to grow with it. In 2013, the NH Energy commission reported that 55% of New Hampshire’s energy used comes from coal, natural gas, and petroleum. That is simply unacceptable for a progressive and forward-facing state like New Hampshire. The energy that comes from coal, natural gas, and petroleum is dirty and spews toxic carbon emissions into the air. Solar energy and nuclear energy are very clean and will help New Hampshire decrease energy prices and grow our economy.

That is why we need new energy solutions today, and can not wait for another generation of politicians to solve it. With the crises of global warming and rising energy costs here in New Hampshire, it is pertinent that we come up with and implement real policies that will help all of us immediately.
