Police Are Communicating With Queen City Shooting Suspect: Update

A man was shot on Amherst Street today, a high school was placed on lockdown, a suspect thought to be at a rooming house is still at-large.

MANCHESTER, NH — Police in the Queen City are attempting to find a possible suspect who reportedly shot a man this morning on Amherst Street, according to a press alert. At just before 8 a.m. on Sept. 7, 2017, officers were sent to Beech Street for a report of a shooting. A caller claimed a man had been shot and needed medical attention, according to Lt. Brian O’Keefe of the Manchester Police Department.

“Officers flooded the area, which is in close proximity to Central High School, but were unable to locate the victim,” O’Keefe stated. “Central High School was placed on a temporary lockdown as officers searched for the victim and a possible crime scene.” (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Bedford NH Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

An officer later located the victim about 20 minutes later on Central Street near Union Street and learned that the shooting occurred near Victory Park on Amherst Street. The man was then transported to the hospital.

“The investigation revealed it was not a random act of violence, nor did it occur on school grounds, so the brief school lockdown was lifted approximately 15 minutes after it was implemented,” O’Keefe stated.

Detectives searched for the possible suspect at an Amherst Street rooming house a short time later. The Manchester Police SWAT team searched the rooming house while evacuating several tenants.

“The suspect was not at the residence, however, detectives are communicating with the him to gather additional information on the investigation,” O’Keefe noted.
