Prepare to Say Goodbye to Bedford Macy's

Report: Location sold; architect hired to design "upscale lifestyle center" to be constructed next to new Whole Foods Store, Wayfarer Inn.

Get ready to say goodbye to the Bedford Macy’s location as the owner of the parcel has sold the South River Road property to a Texas company that will construct an “upscale lifestyle center” next year, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

The property was recently sold for $12 million and a Boston architecture firm has been hired to redesign the 16-acre-plus property. The construction of the center will be just south of New Hampshire’s second Whole Foods Store and a new housing complex at the former Wayfarer Inn.

It is unknown if Macy’s will re-open another New Hampshire store in another location although that prospect is doubtful. Last year, Macy’s closed five stores around the country in an effort to generate about $100 million in corporate savings. The chain also has a store at the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester, a few miles away from the Bedford location. The store is scheduled to close at the end of the year.
