Sanborn Drops Out of Race for House Speaker
Amherst-Bedford state representative cites husband's recent illness as the reason for stepping aside.

State Rep. Laurie Sanborn, R-Bedford, is dropping out of the House Speaker’s race, according to a statement made on Nov. 13.
The state representative for the District 41 floterial district, representing Amherst and Bedford, easily won re-election on Nov. 4, as did her husband, state Sen. Andy Sanborn, R-Bedford, who was also running for re-election.
However, their minds were elsewhere on Election Day as Andy Sanborn was rushed to the emergency room after coming down with a sickness on Nov. 3.

After emergency surgery on Nov. 4, and spending a number of days in the hospital, he is back on his feet. The couple was seen walking in Downtown Concord on South Main Street on Nov. 13, around lunchtime. A few hours later, Laurie Sanborn issued a statement saying she was out of the race.
“As many of you know, my husband Andy became ill last week and spent time in the hospital,” she stated. “While the long term prognosis looks good, today there is sufficient uncertainty. At this time, my priority is Andy’s health. As such, I recognize that today I cannot give 100% to the role of Speaker, as family always comes first. Therefore, I am withdrawing from the Speaker’s race to focus on family and the job of State Representative.”

Laurie Sanborn stated that she was grateful for everyone’s support on her speakership race.
“Andy and I look forward to a great Session and the opportunity to make New Hampshire the best state to live, learn, work and play,” she said.
Laurie Sanborn’s exit from the race leaves former House Speakers Gene Chandler, R-Bartlett, and William O’Brien, R-Mont Vernon, running for the position.
O’Brien issued a statement saying that everyone’s hearts and prayers were with the Sanborns.
“They have contributed so much to New Hampshire and they are such fine people, that I know I join many across New Hampshire in wishing my friend, Andy Sanborn, a speedy and full recovery,” he said.
Chandler also said he and others were thinking of the couple.
“Certainly, our thoughts and prayers are with the Sanborns as they go through this difficult time,” he stated. “Family always trumps politics. We look forward to seeing them both back in their positions as State Senator and State Representative, ably serving their constituents.”
Yesterday, O’Brien received the endorsement of The Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire for the speakership with the group saying that he would focus on liberty and freedom, fiscal conservatism, and social tolerance.
The election is Wednesday.
Also yesterday, state Rep. Steve Shurtleff, D-Concord, was elected Democratic Caucus Leader.
