16 Lakes, Ponds, And Beaches Have Active Cyanobacteria Warnings In New Hampshire

While swimming and wading season are winding down, there are some water body health issues; NH swim map reports no fecal bacteria issues.

CONCORD, NH — While there may not be much swimming at New Hampshire’s lakes, ponds, and beaches since it is getting a bit chilly, there are still active cyanobacteria advisories and warnings in the state.

New warnings, issued in Friday’s alert by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, include active cyanobacteria warnings at Lake Warren in Alstead, Halfmoon Lake in Alton and Barnstead, Jenness Pond in Northwood, Monomonac in Rindge, and Lake Ivanhoe in Wakefield. Continuing warnings include Emerson Pond in Rindge, Arlington Mill Pond in Salem, and Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro.

Active cyanobacteria watches, which have transitioned from alerts, include the Alton, The Broads, Governor's Island, Tuftonboro, and Wolfeboro areas of Lake Winnipesaukee, Locke Lake in Barnstead, French Pond in Henniker, and Robinson Pond in Hudson.

Cyanobacteria warnings that have ended include Province Lake in Effingham and Wakefield, Keyser Pond in Henniker, Pool Pond in Rindge, and Showell Pond in Sandown.

The state said there were no current fecal bacteria advisories at Granite State water bodies or beaches.

Swimmers, waders, and pet owners were warned that blooms and surface scum from cyanobacteria are natural occurrences. However, exposure can bring acute health effects, including skin irritation and mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures.
