Police began the investigation into the arson incidents on Jan. 30, 2016, after a woman reported that contents inside of her car were set on fire, according to Lt. Mark Newport of the Department’s Detective Division. More reports, throughout the day, began to filter in to police about other car break-ins and arson incidents. Newport said an officer and detective began to put together forensic evidence that led to the identification of two suspects – York and Carlin – that were allegedly accomplices in the case.

“The charges are a result of both York and Carlin being accomplices to the crimes of arson and theft in which a person is legally accountable for the conduct of another person when: he is an accomplice of such other person in the commission of the offense,” Newport noted in a press statement.

Newport added that the case was still under investigation by Portsmouth Police Department’s Detective Division. Anyone with any information relative to this investigation is asked to contact Detective Timothy McCain at 603-610-7513.

Both Carlin and York were released on personal recognizance bail and are due in court on April 4.
