GRAY, MAINE — There is a good chance that it will be a white Christmas in most of New Hampshire this year.

Both a hazardous weather outlook and a winter storm watch were issued for the state on Friday by the National Weather Service.

The NWS warned of heavy snowfall and slippery roads beginning Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. NWS forecasters are calling for between 4 and 8 inches by the end of the storm while AccuWeather.com forecasters are predicting 6 to 12 inches for most of the state. Both org's forecasters predict lower snow totals in southern Hillsborough County and along coastal Rockingham County.

“Low pressure will enter the Ohio Valley Saturday before redeveloping near Cape Cod Saturday night,” the NWS said. “It will then move out to sea Sunday morning.”

Forecasters said this will be the first “plowable snow of the year” for most of the state.

“Plan on slippery road conditions due to snow-covered roads,” the alert stated.

The steadiest snow will hit on Saturday night. The alerts cover Merrimack, Hillsborough, and Rockingham counties as well as most of the state.

The winter storm watch is in effect from 3 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

AccuWeather said this cold front is the same one that caused tornadoes in the Midwest but tornadoes are not expected. Temperatures will drop though.

Anyone traveling to Massachusetts or New York on Friday or Saturday can expect a snow-ice mix as well as freezing rain which will make road conditions slippery.
