Another Concord Homeless Fire Reported Near Steel Recycling Business
Concord firefighters, EMTs, and police were sent to a homeless camp next to Schnitzer Steel Industries on Poplar Avenue for another fire.
CONCORD, NH — Concord fire and rescue teams and police were sent to a homeless camp fire on Monday, this time on Poplar Avenue.
Around 2:30 a.m., the Capital Area Mutual Aid Fire Compact dispatchers received a fire report. The dispatcher told firefighters heading to the scene there may not be a fire. The call came a member “of the homeless population down there (who) stated it was across the railroad tracks, but he hadn’t actually seen it.” The caller called a second time to say they heard “some pops” and a car might be on fire, too. Police were also being sent.
“The best access was through the scrap metal yard,” the dispatcher told firefighters.

Around 2:45 a.m., firefighters confirmed fire in the area — including an abandoned car, near Schnitzer Steel Industries, fully involved in flames.
“It’s not going anywhere,” the commander said of the car.

A forestry unit and EMTs were sent to an area of the scrap metal yard from another section of Hall Street, attempting to access the fire from a second area. Firefighters used canisters to begin extinguishing the fire while waiting for EMTs and the forestry unit to arrive.
Just before 3 a.m., one of the firefighters acknowledged they were having difficulty reaching the area due to fencing installed by Schnitzer’s, noting, “They’ve absolutely gated off all of our access points. We’re going to have to work on that.”
A few minutes later, firefighters began overhauling the car but requested other firefighters to tackle some of the fire that had spread into the woods.
