Hooper immediately approached police and said, “All right, let’s go,” and allegedly grabbed the officer on the shoulder and he was taken into custody. “I didn’t hurt anybody,” Hooper allegedly told the officers. The wife later alleged that he punched her in the head. He was arraigned on Aug. 25.
Michael A. Bennett, 21, a homeless man now located in Pembroke, was arrested at 1:08 p.m. on July 23, and charged with theft, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, two default or breach of bail conditions charges, and a bench warrant. The charges stem from alleged incidents at the Shell gas station across from Walmart on Loudon Road on July 9, and the Tedeschi Food Shop on South Main Street on July 13. According to two court affidavits, an officer was sent to the Shell station for a past tense theft of Twisted Tea, about 16 cans, from the store. According to the security footage, two women and a man walked into the store with the women engaging in conversation with the clerk while the man allegedly put cans into his backpack. The women scurried out of the store and the man followed, allegedly without paying for the cans. One of the store employees recognized one of the women to be named “Chelsie,” a former Dunkin’ Donuts employee at the store and the officer matched up a picture of her from the store with her Facebook page as well as the other woman. The officer shared the photo of the man with other officers at the department and one officer alleged it was Bennett, and reported that he had allegedly stolen Twisted Tea before, from other stores. Bennett was arrested by Pittsfield Police on June 24, on a criminal threatening charge, and was involved in pre-trail services with Merrimack County, according to the report. A warrant was issued on July 22. A few days later, an officer was dispatched to Tedeschi for a report of a man stealing a bottle of wine and fleeing up West Street. According to the clerk, the man came into the store and was asking about a product called “Strawberry Ulmann’s,” something the clerk didn’t know about, and breakfast sandwiches. The clerk pointed to where the sandwiches were and the man left. A few hours later, the man came back, went to the wine case, and picked out two 1.5 liter bottles of Sutter Home white zinfandel and walked to the counter, as if to buy the bottles. However, before paying for the wine, the man allegedly bolted out the door without paying for the wine. The officer eyed the video surveillance and took some pictures and later, a sergeant alleged it was Bennett. On July 20, two of the officers caught up with Bennett at the Irving on North State Street. He was shown a copy of the picture a man and allegedly stated, “That’s me.” When the officer showed him another photo of the theft subject, he reportedly shook his head, confirming it was him in the picture. However, when Bennett saw another picture, this time, of himself holding the two bottles, he allegedly changed his mind, according to the officer, and stated he didn’t know who the person was. “No, that’s not me,” he allegedly stated. A few hours later, police were called back to the Irving on North State Street for a theft call involving a man removing two packs of Twisted Tea and leaving the store without paying for them. The officer watched the video and alleged it was Bennett again. Bennett was held without bail and arraigned on July 24.
