BBB Warns of IRS Phone Scam

Better Business Bureau is warning of a recent phone scam that has fraudsters posing as the IRS and threatening to arrest individuals who don’t pay their taxes.

Across the country, consumers have contacted BBB to inquire about the legitimacy of this IRS scam. BBB President, Robert Shomphe says scammers are “spoofing” the phone number to the real IRS hotline, which makes these calls look legitimate. 

Unfortunately, New Hampshire residents have not been spared. One resident of Hooksett contacted BBB after receiving two messages on his answering machine from the IRS threatening to arrest him if he didn’t pay his taxes.

The IRS has stated, they will not contact consumers via telephone or email. If they need to contact you, it will be through a letter in the mail. If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.
