Billie Jean King Stumps for Clinton in Concord

The Woman's Club of Concord is honored to welcome the tennis pro on Jan. 18.

CONCORD, NH - Former tennis pro Billie Jean King will be at the Woman’s Club of Concord at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016.

King won 39 Grand Slam titles in a 24-year career that spanned from 1959 to 1983. Among the many titles and honors, she was a founder of the Women’s Tennis Association, World Team Tennis, and the Women’s Sports Foundation. She was the first woman to be named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, was a Time Magazine person of the year, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.

She is known for her work on women’s rights from campaigning for equal prize money in mens and womens games, to her support for micro-financing, gay rights, and physical fitness for all ages.

“Women need to see other women do well. It empowers them. We, in athletics, can help be a face of change and be a force. That’s the responsibility of all of us,” Billie Jean King said in a 2010 ESPN interview.

King is in New Hampshire to support Hillary Clinton, who is running for the Democratic Nomination for President. The Woman’s Club does not take political positions and has offered members of other presidential campaigns the same opportunity to speak at the Woman’s Club.
