Brogan: Fall Flicks

Hollywood Classics return to Concord screens!

Next week, lucky film fans in Concord will have the opportunity to see two classic films on the big screen - just the way they originally appeared locally. The Way We Were and Moonstruck make a welcome return to downtown Concord.

The Way We Were makes its debut at Red River Theatres on South Main Street, on Monday evening, October 16. In the fall of 1973, it opened at the legendary Cinema 93 on Loudon Road. There it enjoyed a hugely popular run as thousands of moviegoers made the pilgrimage to the much-loved theater. That same fall, the title song topped the charts and would go on to win an Academy Award as the best original song from a motion picture.

Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make their only big-screen appearance together in this deeply felt, lovingly made and beautifully acted drama. Under the direction of Sydney Pollack, there is not a false move in the entire film. It works on so many levels as a love story, as historical drama and as a brilliant piece of Hollywood filmmaking at its best.

Even if you have seen it before or on television, the promised presentation at Red River will make you believe that it is the first time. In addition, there will be trivia, gifts and lots of fun surprises to make the evening truly memorable. There is one evening showing at 7 PM.

Tickets are available on-line at redrivertheatres.org or at the theaters box-office.

Later that week, on Wednesday evening, October 18, at the Bank of NH Stage on South Main - across the street from Red River - the multi-award winning Moonstruck comes back to Concord.

Winner of numerous awards including Oscars for lead actress Cher, supporting actress, Olympia Dukakis, and writer John Patrick Shanley, Moonstruck took the country by storm after its release in December of 1987. It opened in Concord in January of 1988 at the former Concord Theatre, now the Bank of NH Stage. It settled in for an historic run, being seen by more than 14,000 people from the area.

The Concord Theatre opened on Wednesday, October 18, 1933, at 7 PM. The gala event on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 7 PM, will mark the 90th anniversary of the opening of that theater, which remained a Main Street fixture until September of 1994.

Laura Knoy, the NHPR legend, will host the pre-film festivities, interviewing special guests and sharing other surprises with the audience. Laura, Margaret Porter and I have created a fun-filled evening with FREE admission to mark this special occasion.

South Main Street is definitely the place to be next week! Come join the fun!
