STRATEGIC FOOD SYSTEMS for NH, New England, and the World

Like much of the world, New Hampshire depends on a complex, fragile network of supply chains to provide one of our most basic needs – the food we eat!

WHO:
 Dr Kathryn (Kate) Anderson (Director, Food & Environment Program, Union of Concerned Scientists)
 Julie Davenson, M.H.S.A. (Director, Program Integration Services, Soil & Climate Initiative; Board President, NOFA-NH)
 Dr Julie Snorek (Science & Technology Policy Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science)

WHAT: Today, only about 3% of the food consumed in NH is produced in-state. Can we do better than this?? Research identifies innovative ways to increase the percentage of food we produce right here in NH, supporting the viability of our own food producers. We will discuss diverse local and global food production systems, look at expected costs and impacts, and consider how all forms of agriculture interact with climate.

WHY: Our planet is moving inexorably toward a human population of 10 billion. The “Green Revolution” of the 1960s-70s greatly expanded global food production, but today those gains are slowing and reversing in many places. Significant costs to environmental quality and human health are emerging. Agriculture has become one of the biggest and most intractable global sources of greenhouse gases. Yet maybe it doesn’t have to be this way. Can locally adaptive regenerative farming techniques make our food systems healthier, more resilient, more efficient? Can they also be as productive as ‘industrial agriculture’? If so, how? These are some of the
questions our guest experts will explore in this interactive session.
