CONCORD, NH — Granite Staters have taken fantastic pictures and videos of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights, during the last few weeks.

If the clouds clear after the forecasted rain and snow this weekend, a dazzling light show should be displayed in some parts of New Hampshire. The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch through the weekend. Such storms can be bad news for people relying on radio and satellite communications but the opposite for people who have seen and experienced the northern lights on their bucket lists.

Excitement about the auroras began building earlier this week when NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory discovered coronal hole 30 times the size of Earth, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. The holes are cooler areas where the sun does not glow as brightly and are spread across the sun’s atmosphere. The light show can be seen in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

A WMUR-TV viewer posted a video of the light show late Thursday night and early Friday morning from Mount Chorcroua. The Aurora Borealis was also seen in southern and central New Hampshire, including this video from late February.
