Canterbury Shaker Village Hosts XC5k Race

9th Annual race on May 14 is part of Capital Area Race Series (CARS) and will kick off 2016 season at National Historic Landmark

CANTERBURY, NH - Canterbury Shaker Village will host the 9th Annual Canterbury Shaker Village XC5k race at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, according to a press statement.

Day-of registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Village. Registration is $25. Children 10 and under are free. The museum will also open for the 2016 season on May 14 and will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. offering visitors both guided and self-guided tours exploring the Shakers’ 200-year legacy of innovative design, entrepreneurship and simple living.

Participants can run or walk the course, which is totally unpaved and totally beautiful crossing through fields, woods, around ponds and pastures of the National Historic Landmark, which sits on nearly 700 acres. Music is provided along the course for inspiration and the first 300 registrants get t-shirts.

The 5k race is race number four in the Capital Area Race Series (CARS). Runners and walkers can pre-register at shakers.org/xc5k.

The event is sponsored by Grappone Automotive, Cigna, Concord Oral Surgery, P.A., Crystal Rock, D.L. Carlson Investment Group, Inc., Orr & Reno, Professional Care Care of New England, Inc. and Runner’s Alley. Proceeds benefit educational programs at Canterbury Shaker Village.

Visitors to the Village this year can look forward to expanded self-guided galleries in the Dwelling House and themed days. From mid-June through October, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about a different aspects of Shaker life depending upon the day of their visit. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays will feature Brethren industries demonstrations including broom making, printing and woodworking. Tuesdays, Thursdays will highlight Sister industries demonstrations including rug hooking and braiding, weaving, spinning, and sewing.

Saturdays will offer family-friendly programming that explores the lives of children raised in the Village. Sundays will explore themes relating to community life and the Shakers' legacy.

Other upcoming events include a Plant Sale on June 4 at the Shaker Box Lunch and Farm Stand; and Simply Shaker Dinner and Auction, the annual gathering benefiting Canterbury Shaker Village on Wednesday, June 22. Upcoming Shaker-inspired workshops include Holistic Orchard Workshop on May 21; The Shaker Dance Revival Project Summer Dance Intensive on June 22-24 and June 27-29; and Medicinal Plant Walk on June 11.
