Chamber launches new board leadership program with area nonprofits

Concord, NH (July 2014) The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce has partnered with ten area non-profit organizations to provide volunteer board experience and training to emerging and existing leaders.

Leadership Greater Concord, the Chamber’s long-standing leadership development program, has added a day-long module on board governance and best practices. In June, ten members of the 2014 Leadership Greater Concord graduating class, along with representatives from the Concord Young Professional Network, participated in this year’s pilot.

The morning program consisted of governance training, best practices and fundraising exercises presented by Pam McDonald from the Council on Fundraising (CONFR). The afternoon program included a panel of five area non-profits facilitated by Northeast Delta Dental CEO Tom Raffio. Panelists presented real life case studies regarding challenges and opportunities faced by their respective organizations, and how their boards were engaged to either seize the opportunity or face the challenge.

Participants in the program will be matched up with a local non-profit organization and serve ex officio on that board for a one-year term, beginning in September 2014.

The concept for the program was the brainchild of Rosemary Heard, president of CATCH Neighborhood Housing, which is also a participating non-profit organization. “There just seems to be a need to provide training and an entry mechanism for the next generation of volunteer leaders. As a past board member of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, I was familiar with Leadership Greater Concord and thought that a program like this could be a natural fit.”
