A NON-MANDATORY PRE BID meeting will be held at the High School, located at 106 Village Street, Penacook, NH on May 7, 2026 at 10:00 am. Contractors that can’t attend the meeting must arrange a site visit by contacting Fred Reagan at 603-848-1741 or vis E-mail at <a href="mailto:freagan@mvsdpride.org" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">freagan@mvsdpride.org</a>.

Bid documents must be obtained by Emailing the request to Fred Reagan.

Most homeowners in Bow think about pruning when something goes wrong. A branch scraping the roofline. A limb that looks off after a rough winter. The truth is, the best time to act is before any of that becomes obvious right in that quiet window before the trees wake up.
In Merrimack County, late winter through very early spring is when deciduous trees are still dormant but the hardest cold has passed. That window matters more than most people realize.
Why Late-Winter Timing Changes What a Tree Can Do?
When a tree breaks dormancy and pushes new growth, it draws heavily on stored energy. If you trim after that flush has started, the tree is spending twice &mdash; once on the new growth and again on wound closure. Trim before it, and the tree channels that first surge of energy directly into recovery. The cuts heal faster, and the structure you shape is the one the canopy builds around all season.
This is especially true for sugar maples and white oaks, both of which are common across Bow and throughout Merrimack County. These trees have strong growth responses to well-timed cuts. Get the timing right and the canopy fills in fuller. Miss it, and you are fighting the tree's momentum rather than working with it.
What a Crew Looks for That Homeowners Often Miss?
Before spring growth starts, a trained eye can see the full branch structure without leaves in the way. That visibility matters. Co-dominant stems two leads of similar size growing upward together are easy to identify now and hard to see once a canopy fills in. Left alone, those stems create included bark, which is one of the most common causes of failure during summer storms and heavy snow events.
We also look for decay pockets at old wound sites, deadwood that winter may have finished off, and clearance zones around structures. Along the Merrimack River corridor and in neighborhoods closer to South Bow Road, white pines shed heavy loads of ice and snow every winter. That weight stresses lateral branches, and early-spring assessment catches the damage before it becomes a hazard.
What You Can Check on Your Own?
You do not need a crew to do an initial walk-around. Look for these before you call anyone:
<ul>
<li>Branches with no buds forming while surrounding branches are starting to swell</li>
<li>Bark that has split or peeled, especially along the trunk or at major crotches</li>
<li>Limbs hanging at an angle that was not there last fall</li>
<li>Any branch that has dropped noticeably lower under its own weight</li>
</ul>
If you are seeing more than one of these on the same tree, that is worth a closer look before growth starts in earnest.
Tree Trimming in Merrimack County Before Buds Break
A question that comes up often: does it matter if there is still snow on the ground? Not much, as long as the ground is not frozen solid and access is manageable. In zone 5b, Bow's typical freeze-thaw cycles in March mean conditions shift quickly. The goal is to be done with major structural work before bud swell, which usually runs from mid-March into early April depending on the year.
Spring-blooming trees ornamental cherries, serviceberries, and the like are a different case. Trim those right after bloom, not before, or you cut next season's flower buds off entirely.

Last April, after that heavy wet snow came through and knocked out power for tens of thousands of people across the state, my phone didn't stop ringing. Most of the calls were about white pines. Tops snapped off. Large limbs split from the trunk. One homeowner near Penacook called and asked me something I get every year: "Is it done? Or can it come back?"
That question has a real answer, and it depends on a few things worth knowing.

<h2>White Pines Are Both Strong and Brittle?</h2>
White pine is the most common large tree you'll find on residential properties throughout Merrimack County. It grows fast, gets tall, and looks beautiful. It's also one of the most vulnerable trees to heavy, wet snow because of how it holds its branches. A quarter inch of ice can add 250 pounds of weight to a single limb. When a spring storm hits while the tree is still dormant and hasn't shed any foliage, that weight has nowhere to go.
The top, called the "leader," is the most exposed part of the tree. Lose that, and the tree faces a real decision about what to do next.

<h2>Can a White Pine Survive a Lost Leader?</h2>
Yes, often it can, but the outcome depends on how much of the crown remains. A tree that lost its top but still has two-thirds or more of its live branches standing has a reasonable path forward. One of the side branches near the break will often begin to grow upward over the next season or two, eventually taking over as the new leader.
A tree that lost more than half its crown is a harder case. It may survive for years, but the shape will change permanently and the tree will be more open to decay through the wound. <h2>What the Break Looks Like Matters?</h2>
<h3>A clean break is better than a split</h3>
A clean snap, where the top broke off at a single point, leaves a smaller wound and heals more predictably. A split, where the trunk or main branch tore downward, creates a larger opening and a rougher wound edge. Torn wood invites decay more quickly than a clean cut.
If the break left a jagged stub sticking up from the tree, that stub will not heal over. It will decay inward toward the trunk over time. Getting that stub removed with a proper cut at the right angle gives the tree its best path to closing the wound.

<h2>Signs the Tree Is Better Taken Down</h2>
<ul>
<li>The break occurred at or very near the main trunk</li>
<li>More than half the crown is gone</li>
<li>The remaining branches are mostly on one side, making the tree lean noticeably</li>
<li>There is soft or punky wood visible at the break point</li>
<li>The tree is within reach of your house, driveway, or a utility line</li>
</ul>
That last point carries real weight around neighborhoods near areas like the I-93 corridor. A weakened white pine that is already leaning toward a structure does not get more stable over time. <h2>One Thing Worth Doing Right Now</h2>
Walk your white pines after any significant storm. Look up at the crown. If you see a raw, exposed wound at the top or a large branch torn away from the trunk, note where it is and what is within falling distance. You do not need to panic. You just need a clear picture of what you're dealing with before the next storm season arrives.
