Concord Firefighters Mourn With Others At Ground Zero

CONCORD, NH — Concord firefighters were in New York on Saturday to mourn with others during the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Professional Firefighters of Concord, Local 1045, sent seven members to attend events with firefighters, police, and others from around the nation, marking the anniversary. Justin Kantar, the president of the local, said it was “definitely a solemn day,” reflecting on the thousands of people lost, including many first responders, and “embracing the love of brotherhood in the arms of comrades.”

Kantar said the day was about remembrance but also unity — and “to never forget those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

The firefighters ranged in tenure of service from six to 26 years. Some were at Ground Zero for the first time; others have been there for remembrances two or three times. Many Concord firefighters have also attended funerals — more than anyone should ever experience, he added.

“Today is a day we must never forget,” Kantar said, while thinking about the 343 firefighters lost on Sept. 11. “We must never forget why we were here, why we serve others before ourselves, even up to the final call. We must never forget our profession’s heritage, those who came before us, those who we currently serve with, and those who will lead the way after our final call.”

According to Concord Fire Chief Sean Brown, there were no active members of the Concord Fire Department who responded to the attack site as first responders. Those who went to New York to assist have since retired.

Kantar also thanked Banks Chevrolet for donating a shuttle bus to the firefighters to attend the event.
