Concord Firefighters Wake Up 6 During South State Street Blaze

Breaking: Acting-Battalion Chief: The smoke detectors inside an apartment building in the South End this morning were not functioning.

CONCORD, NH — Six residents of an apartment building in the South End are probably lucky to be uninjured today after Concord Fire and Rescue teams were able to wake them up while their building was on fire, according to a press alert. At just before 2 a.m. on March 17, 2018, a resident of Perley Street called police after seeing a building on fire in the area of South State and Perley streets, according Anthony Manning, an acting-battalion chief with the Concord Fire Department. Three engine companies, a ladder truck, three ambulances, and shift command were all called to the scene and discovered a fire on the second floor apartment porch, extending into the building at 68 South State St.

“Companies made an aggressive fire attack and conducted an immediate search for any trapped occupants,” Manning stated. “Due to a lack of functional smoke detectors, six people were awoken and evacuated from the building by fire department personnel. The fire was quickly knocked down, with damage limited to the area of origin.”

Off-duty personnel were re-called to work and mutual aid companies from Allenstown, Boscawen, Bow, Pembroke, and the Penacook Rescue covered Concord’s four fire stations during the incident, Manning noted.

“The cause of the fire was investigated by the Concord Fire Department and determined to be accidental,” he said. “The Concord Fire Department reminds the public of the importance of functional smoke detectors on every floor and in each bedroom of your residence and to properly dispose of smoking materials in a safe manner.”
