PENACOOK, NH — Concord police are investigating a stabbing inside an apartment building in Penacook on Monday.

Around 4:30 p.m., a tenant in a Merrimack Street building claimed his upstairs neighbor stabbed him a few minutes before after an argument. The dispatcher said they believed the fight started due to a noise complaint or someone talking about someone else. The victim told dispatch the wound was on the side of his abdomen.

Firefighters and rescue teams staged nearby as officers converged on the apartment, confirmed the stabbing, and cleared EMTs to come in and treat the victim. The victim confirmed to the officer it was an upstairs tenant who stabbed him, according to scanner chatter. He was taken to Concord Hospital a short time later.

Police questioned others in the apartment and gained permission to search the unit. They also gave a name and description of the suspect, and other officers began searching the village for him. The evidence technician van also arrived at the scene.

At just past 6 p.m., the suspect was found walking outside of the New Hampshire State Prison for Men on North State Street.

After taking the suspect into custody, the officer told dispatch he found a knife inside the man’s backpack, according to scanner chatter. Back up officers also arrived.

Not long after the suspect was arrested, an officer reported to others the victim was being brought into the operating room for surgery at Concord Hospital.

According to posts on Patch, the suspect has had more than a dozen prior arrests during the past decade or so, mostly when he was a homeless camper in the city, including several criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, public disposal of human waste, loitering, breach of bail, possession of alcohol on private property, and a number of warrants, too.

Concord NH Patch will update this post when more information becomes available.
