Concord’s White Park Pond Prepped For Skating: Video

Concord firefighters sprayed water across the pond Sunday before a cold snap heads into the city, which is expected to freeze the pond.

CONCORD, NH — Off-duty Concord firefighters lent a hand to the Concord Parks and Recreation Department on Sunday, spraying water onto White Park Pond.

The water was used to wash down the snow and also add more water to the pond, in preparation for skating. David Gill, the director of the department, said temperatures were dropping Sunday night through Thursday, giving the water the chance to properly freeze on the pond. Presuming the pond freezes, after that, the recreation department will allow skating.

While the department has not finalized exact hours for skating, Gill said The Merrimack Lodge at White Park will be open for skate rentals and music, too, on both weekdays and weekends.

Temps tonight will drop down to the teens and be below freezing until Thursday and Friday. On Monday night, temps will drop below zero — with wind chills making it feel like it is 12 degrees below zero. While temperatures will be in the low 30s on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, overnight temps will be cold all week — which should freeze the pond.

The Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament and Winter Festival is scheduled to return later this month, too, from Jan. 28 to Jan. 30. A postponement date, in case of warming temps melting the pond ice, is scheduled for March 18 to March 20 at the Everett Arena. Festival details are scheduled to be posted later this month.
