According to court documents, on Oct. 17, 2015, a sergeant driving in McKee Square saw a light colored Mazda Tribute and knew that a similar SUV had been reported stolen about an hour before from Storrs Street. The vehicle also matched the description of one that was reportedly involved in a theft incident at the Speedway on North Main earlier in the afternoon.

The sergeant followed the vehicle onto South Street and then Fayette Street where it stopped. A woman got out of the vehicle as the cruiser was pulling into the driveway. The sergeant ran a check and alleged it was the same vehicle stolen earlier in the day.

“The driver was a female who continued walking around the back of the car and away from me,” the sergeant alleged. “I identified myself as a police officer and told the driver to stop. She looked directly at me, turned to her left, and ran.”

The sergeant called in a description of the woman and requested backup as the woman ran toward the Concord Community Music School area but they were unable to find her.

The officers though were unable to find the woman.

On Oct. 20, 2015, the sergeant met with another officer to eye video footage at the Speedway and they were able to identify the woman as Hyland from previous encounters.

Hyland’s license, according to the court affidavit, which was issued the next day, was suspended in August 2014 for driving while intoxicated. At the time – May 2013 – she reportedly struck a deer on Mountain Road and refused a field sobriety test. She was also reportedly in a relationship with the owner of the Tribute, who had reported it stolen, according to the affidavit.

A warrant was issued on Oct. 22, 2015.

On Oct. 22, 2015, Books a Million (also known as BAM!) on Fort Eddy Road reported a theft incident at the store that was investigated by a third officer and allegedly linked to Hyland.

Later on that week, on Oct. 26, Hyland was arrested for criminal trespass after police were sent to Thorndike Street for an intruder in their home.

The caller reported that he heard noises – like someone was rustling things in his basement – just after he went to bed. He went downstairs and saw a young, thin woman sitting on the top of the stairs holding a three-foot piece of wood.

“(The man) said that the female stated something along the lines that there were a bunch of cops in the basement,” according to the court affidavit. “He said the female repeated that a few times.” (The man) thought that the female looked like she was under the influence of drugs.”

The man escorted the woman out of his house but she stopped at the backdoor. The man then escorted the woman to the front door, unlocked it, and pushed her outside, according to the report. The woman then ran into a neighbor’s yard and he called police.

While at the scene speaking to the man, the officer received a message from dispatch that a Pierce Street resident was reporting that a woman had just entered his home.

The officer went to that home where the man stated that the woman entered his home and when confronted, reportedly stated that she “needed to hide out for about an hour.” He told her to leave but she refused. After several requests, he physically escorted her out of the home and called police. The man alleged that the woman appeared to be under the influence of drugs, according to the court affidavit.

Then, a third call came in to dispatch reporting another trespass incident at an apartment on South State Street and officers were sent there.

According to a female tenant, she thought she heard noises in another part of the apartment so she went to check on her children, who were fine. She then went to the kitchen and saw a woman pushing at the backdoor. When she went to see who it was, the woman pushed herself into the apartment.

“(The woman) stated that the female was breathing heavy, pacing around, and looked scared,” the report stated. “She mentioned that the female appeared to have been attacked with dirt on her face and ripped clothing.”

The victim let the woman use her cellphone and then, the woman stated she felt like she was going to vomit and bolted out the front door of the apartment.

Three officers searched the area and found the woman, later identified as Hyland, on Perley Street.

On Nov. 5, 2015, Hyland turned herself in on the Speedway, stolen car, and driving allegations. A month later, she appeared at police headquarters again to answer to the BAM! theft allegation.

Hyland is due in court on Jan. 11, 2016.
