DIXVILLE, N.H. — A Connecticut woman sustained serious injuries Saturday afternoon after falling from her all-terrain vehicle during a steep trail descent in Coos County.

At approximately 12:39 p.m. on Saturday, Monika Szenk-Selker, 52, of West Granby, Connecticut, was operating an ATV on the Dixville Peaks Trail in Dixville. According to authorities, Szenk-Selker was slowly navigating a steep, muddy section of rock ledge when she felt her machine beginning to tip.

She fell from the ATV before it rolled over, suffering serious injuries upon impacting the ground.

Her riding companion was nearby, immediately rendered first aid, and called 911. The incident prompted a coordinated emergency response from the Colebrook Fire Department, 45th Parallel EMS, and New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers.

Challenging terrain made direct access impossible for rescue vehicles. Unable to safely drive a machine down to the crash site, emergency responders and willing bystanders placed Szenk-Selker into a litter and carried her roughly a quarter-mile up the steep slope on foot.

They then loaded her into a Colebrook Fire Department Rescue Argo staged at the top of the incline and transported her along the trail to an awaiting 45th Parallel EMS ambulance on Diamond Peak Road. Paramedics subsequently transported Szenk-Selker to Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

After investigating the incident, Conservation Officers concluded that the technical, hazardous terrain was the primary factor in the crash.
