Culvert Failure Closes Broad Cove Drive into Next Week
No thru traffic at 174 Broad Cove Drive from West Parish Road as repairs will be made into next week.

A failed culvert has caused Broad Cove Drive to close to thru traffic from 174 Broad Cove Drive to West Parish Road. The direct cause of the culvert failure is due to aging infrastructure. Recent rain and snowmelt contributed to the decay with excess groundwater and sand erosion around the aging pipe. The actual age of the culvert is unknown.
A truck driver for Concord General Services noticed a guardrail dangling off the edge of the road around 7:00 a.m. this morning while patrolling to treat for icy road conditions. The road was closed immediately in the interest of public safety upon discovering some washed out gravel and the failed culvert underneath the road. “It was a quick, proactive action to close the road due to the potential of a possible sinkhole,” stated General Services Director, Chip Chesley. “We’re taking immediate action to reopen the road as soon as possible once repairs are made.”
Due to the nature of the repair and equipment needed, the City has contracted GMI Asphalt to restore road conditions. Crews will begin mobilizing equipment on Friday with anticipation to start repairs on Monday. Work anticipated includes cutting the road, excavating down to the pipe, restoring the riprap rock material, laying new pipe, backfilling the trench, and paving the area of road. Broad Cove Drive will remain closed to thru traffic into next week from 174 Broad Cove Drive to West Parish Road until conditions have been restored. Motorists and emergency vehicles must seek an alternative route. An update will be provided when further information becomes available.
