Statement on the Mishandling of Detention Center Settlement Agreements in New Hampshire

There is a growing concern regarding how survivors of abuse at the New Hampshire Youth Detention Center are being treated—particularly by the very lawyers who are supposed to represent them. Victims are being urged to sign settlement agreements without being told that the terms of those agreements are changing. Many are not informed that if they waited, they could potentially receive significantly more money.

Even worse, survivors are being told they will receive a certain amount of compensation—only to find out after signing that the actual amount is much less than promised. This is not just misleading; it’s a betrayal of trust.

At the same time, the State of New Hampshire is underpaying survivors and treating them as if they are the ones who have done something wrong. Rather than supporting those who have come forward with unimaginable trauma, the state is creating a process that feels cold, dishonest, and retraumatizing.

This system is failing survivors at every level. It is time for transparency, accountability, and justice. Survivors deserve to be treated with respect, told the truth, and properly compensated—not manipulated and misled
