Don't Forget to Clear Your Gas Meters

Liberty Utilities: High snowbanks, snowdrifts could contribute to a dangerous situation.

Heavy snow from the recent blizzard and subsequent snowstorms has resulted in mountainous snowbanks near homes and businesses across the state.

“Unfortunately, these snowbanks can be dangerous,” said John Shore, spokesman for Liberty Utilities in New Hampshire. “We’ve had a couple of incidents involving snow removal equipment that resulted in gas leaks.”

There were two separate incidents where a small front end loader was used to move large piles of snow. In both cases, a gas meter was struck by the loader causing a dangerous natural gas leak.

“Our crews responded quickly and were able to repair the leaks without incident,” said Shore. “Once meters are covered in snow, it’s very difficult to tell where they are and accidents can happen. We want to get the word out to homeowners, businesses and snow removal crews to use caution when moving snow with snowplows and other heavy equipment. It’s important to know where the utility meters are before working.”

Removing snow from a roof can also be dangerous to gas meters. Falling snow and ice can damage a meter and cause leaks.

Liberty is asking customers to take the time to clear snow from gas meters so they are visible. However, caution is needed. According to Shore, shoveling to the vicinity of the meter is fine but he warns that using a shovel to clear snow from the meter itself could cause damage. A broom or automotive snow brush are safe tools to use on the meter.

If a leak does occur customers should:

  • Leave the area immediately and call 911 or your utility’s emergency number from a safe location.
  • Turn off nearby vehicles
  • Avoid anything that could cause a spark such as smoking or any type of flame
  • Keep others from entering the area

Liberty is also asking customers to make sure their heating and water heater vents are kept clear. Snow that blocks these vents could cause deadly exhaust gases to migrate back into living spaces.
