Elderly Woman Dies During Laconia House Fire: Report

Virginia Higgins, 89, the mother-in-law of state Rep. Gregg Hough, died of smoke inhalation after a fire inside her home on Highland Street.

LACONIA, NH — The mother-in-law of a Republican state representative died on Wednesday during a fire inside a home on Highland Street in Laconia.

Virginia Higgins, 89, died due to smoke inhalation, according to an autopsy. The manner of her death was accidental, according to Paul Parisi, the state fire marshal.

Firefighters arrived at the home around 2 p.m. and found fire coming from a first-floor window. There were reports that there might be someone trapped inside, according to Parisi.

"Laconia firefighters made a swift entry into the building and were able to rescue an individual who was unconscious and not breathing," he said. "Lifesaving measures were attempted at the scene and the victim was transported to Lakes Region General Hospital. Unfortunately, the victim ultimately passed away at the hospital."

The state, local firefighters, and police are still investigating the origin and cause of the fire.

Parisi said all citizens should have working smoke alarms in their homes.

"In the event of a fire, immediately exit your home and call 9-1-1," he said in a statement.

According to press reports, Higgins is the mother-in-law of state Rep. Gregg Hough (R-Laconia), who lives on the second floor with his wife, Sue Higgins.
