Concord Man Faces Felony Assault, Other Charges

Police allege that Dale Churchill choked his fiancée after she ended their relationship.

A Concord man is facing assault charges, including a felony, after an alleged domestic incident last month.

Dale S. Churchill, 52, was arrested at 9:33 p.m. on Oct. 12, and charged with second-degree assault (personal weapons), a felony, simple assault (personal weapons), and resisting arrest or detention.

According to an arrest report and court documents, officers were called to intersection of North Spring and Prince streets for a report of a domestic in the area. Multiple callers heard a woman screaming and a man assaulting the woman.

Officers scanned the area and one determined that the parties involved had entered a home on Maple Street. One officer spoke with a man at the home, Churchill, and alleged that he smelled like alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was slurred.

“Arrest me,” Churchill allegedly told the officer. “She hit me in the head and I hit her back.”

The officer reported that Churchill had “a small bump on the back of his head” but he wasn’t bleeding. He also had abrasions on his knuckles.

Churchill allegedly told the officer that the woman he was fighting with his fiancée and she hit him in the back of the head with a bottle. He then allegedly slapped her in the face, he stated.

“That was wrong,” he allegedly told the officer. “I shouldn’t have done that. Go ahead and arrest me.”

The officer told Churchill that the matter would be investigated first. Churchill allegedly told the officer that the two were at her house on North Spring Street when the incident occurred.

Another officer spoke to the woman who was outside and alleged that Churchill “grabbed her by the neck and choked her.” The woman was “visibly upset and crying” and had red marks on her shoulder, bicep, and cheek.

The woman alleged that Churchill showed up at her apartment but she wouldn’t let him in. Churchill allegedly kept knocking on her window and she later let him in. The two began arguing when the woman told Churchill their relationship was finished. That’s when he grabbed her, she alleged, and also hit her on the back of the head with a picture frame. They later fought outside too, according to the woman.

An officer assisted the woman back to her home to gather evidence. The officer reported that the scene on North Spring Street “was consistent” with what the woman reported to police.

A male witness also told officers that both had allegedly been drinking earlier in day and fighting about their relationship. The witness also alleged that Churchill hit the woman, according to the report.

Churchill was later arrested.

In his booking cell, Churchill later allegedly refused to cooperate with police until he was able to press charges against his fiancée, according to the report. The officer told him that she wasn’t being charged and Churchill allegedly replied, “Well then, I’m not going to jail then.”

Churchill allegedly refused to allow himself to be cuffed and a sergeant assisted in forcefully placing his hands behind his back. He was arraigned remotely the next day.
