Fecal Bacteria Advisories In Rye, Warner; Cyanobacteria In Canterbury, Hudson: NH DES

The NH Department of Environmental Services warns swimmers, waders, boaters, and pet owners to take precautions at 9 beaches and lakes.

CONCORD, NH — Environmental officials in New Hampshire warn of fecal bacteria and cyanobacteria found this week in state water bodies.

On Thursday, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services announced new warnings and advisories as well as advisories and warnings that have been removed from the state’s water body list. Active cyanobacteria warnings include Lyford Pond in Canterbury, Harvey Lake in Northwood, and Robinson Pond in Hudson.

Active cyanobacteria alerts include Northwood Lake in Northwood, which has been posted in prior warnings, as well as Swains Lake in Barrington and Lee’s Pond in Moultonborough.

Officials said warnings were issued when cell counts exceeded “recreational health threshold” levels. Alerts are issued when samples, blooms, and density are visually confirmed.

Exposure can lead to irritated skin, numbness, nausea and vomiting, seizures, and diarrhea. Damage can also be done to the liver and nervous systems due to exposure.

The state also posted current fecal bacteria advisories at Jenness Beach State Park in Rye, the Warner Town Beach, and Tannery Pond Beach in Wilmot.

Cyanobacteria advisories have been closed at Arlington Mill Reservoir in Salem, Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham, Lake Monomonac in Rindge, and Great Pond in Kingston.
