CANTERBURY, NH — Firefighters and police from around the capital region teamed up to rescue a dog that fell into a frozen pond on Thursday.
Around 11:15 a.m., the Canterbury Fire Department received reports of a dog falling through the ice on a small pond on Baptist Hill Road. When they arrived, Chief Mike Gamache of the Canterbury Fire Department said, the dog’s owner was at the scene but could not rescue it. The dog fell through the ice, was unable to self-rescue, and in distress.
“The first crew to arrive from Canterbury used extension ladders that they placed on the ice in an attempt to get closer to the dog as additional resources were responding,” he said. “Observing that the dog was getting weaker, an additional ladder was placed on the ice in an attempt to get closer to the dog. One department member was able to crawl out on the ladders and get closer to the dog and loop a rope around the dog’s neck.”

Once the rope was secured, the crew pulled the dog from the water, onto the ice, and then to shore, Gamache said. The firefighters wrapped the dog in a blanket and carried it to the owner.
“Other than being cold, wet, and fatigued, the dog showed no signs of injury,” he added.

The call took about 20 minutes to complete, Gamache said. He also thanked the other agencies that assisted the department — including Canterbury police, firefighters from Boscawen and Loudon, Capital Area Fire Chief Gilbert, and the Penacook Rescue team.
