UNH Student Killed in I-93 Crash

NHSP: Alcohol, lack of seatbelt appear to be factors in death of Gordon Borek, 22, who struck a tree near Exit 17 yesterday.

CANTERBURY, NH - A Durham man was killed yesterday afternoon after an accident just outside of Concord on I-93 South, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Gordon Borek, 22, of Durham, was killed after his Toyota Corolla veered off the Interstate on May 28, 2016, and struck a tree. The Penacook Rescue unit as well as Boscawen and Canterbury police all arrived at the scene to assist but Borek was pronounced dead at the scene, according to NHSP.

According to Sgt. Maurice Sampson of the NHSP, “it appears that alcohol may have been a factor in this crash” although the investigation is ongoing, according to a press statement.

Borek not wearing a seatbelt before the impact may have also contributed to his death, Sampson noted.

“Several witnesses who had stopped at the scene stated that Mr. Borek was driving erratically before he drove off the road,” he noted. “The public is reminded that seat belts save lives. This crash was potentially survivable had a seat belt been worn.”

According to his online profile, Borek was an active football and hockey player at Holderness High School, graduating in 2013. He later went on to play for club and intramural hockey at UNH, where his father was also a coach, while also attending classes at the school. He worked at Dunkin’ Donuts in Durham, according to his LinkedIn profile. Borek was arrested in October 2013 on an alcohol charge on the UNH campus as a teenager, according to a police log published on fosters.com at the time.
