Girl on Brady Boys' Hockey Team Can Continue to Play

Judge rules that Shelby Herrington can stay on boy's team.

A judge in Merrimack County Superior Court has granted the wish of a local girl who sued to continue to play on the boys’ hockey.

Shelby Herrington of Bishop Brady High School received a preliminary injunction earlier this week to continue playing on the boys’ hockey team despite the creation of a girls’ team at the same school.

Herrington has been playing on the boys’ team for two years. However, earlier this year, the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association, the group that organizes and coordinates sports game at the high school level, banned her from playing for the boys’ team. Her parents filed a suit and a judge allowed her to play the first three games of the season. A second judgment, the preliminary injunction, was issued on Dec. 19.

Robert Carey, an attorney with Orr-Reno in Concord, said Herrington was ready to get back in the game on a permanent basis.

“Shelby is very pleased with the judge's ruling and so are we,” he said. “She is glad she can continue playing on the team.”
