CONCORD, NH — Nearly a dozen Granite State communities will host Homeless Persons Memorial Day ceremonies Wednesday.

Wednesday is the first night of winter and the longest night of the year. In New Hampshire, 93 people died in 2022. Some of the people who will be mourned on Wednesday are listed here. They were either homeless at the time of their deaths or had been for an extended period of time, according to Maggie Fogarty of the American Friends Service Committee.

"It's important to remember the individuals we lost this year, to reflect together about the Light that each one of them carried, and the fact that they were taken from us too soon," she said. "In this way, we continuously renew our commitment to build a world in which no one dies of poverty or neglect. We have more than enough resources to make it possible for everyone to thrive. We need the political will to make sure that our federal, state and local budgets reflect our values and our obligation to care for each other."

Vigils will be held at 11:45 a.m. in Manchester, 4 p.m. in Concord, 5 p.m. in Portsmouth, and 6 p.m. in Nashua. A complete list of locations can be found here in PDF format.
