MA Woman Rescued, Carried From NH's West Rattlesnake Mountain

Officials from several New Hampshire agencies responded and found the injured woman from Newton, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon.

HOLDERNESS, NH — A Massachusetts woman was rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after being rescued from a trail on West Rattlesnake Mountain with an injured ankle, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Officials from several agencies responded and found the injured woman — Elizabeth Gerlach from Newton, MA —around 0.5 miles from the trailhead of Pasture Trail at 12:50 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game said.

She was treated, carried off the mountain, and taken by Plymouth Fire-Rescue to a Plymouth hospital, according to officials.

"New Hampshire Fish and Game relies heavily upon volunteer rescue groups to complete the mission of search and rescue in the woodlands of the state," New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said Tuesday.

They added: "New Hampshire Fish and Game also reminds hikers to prepare themselves before venturing out into the wilderness, including packing the ten essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets and pants, and a knife."

West Rattlesnake Mountain, located in Holderness, is a two-mile hike considered to be easy to moderate, according to Hike New England.

The National Park Service offers a list of "Hike Smart" tips for hiking safety, including a reminder to "take your time and watch your step."

"Be careful and watch where you are walking, especially on slippery areas or near cliffs," officials added. "Stick to dry paths and solid rock areas with good footing."
