MILLSFIELD, NH — A woman from Massachusetts was taken to the hospital Saturday after crashing the ATV she was riding in New Hampshire’s North Country.

Around 4:45 p.m., New Hampshire Fish & Game conservation officers were told by state police there was a crash on Newell Brook Road in Millsfield. Officers, along with Errol fire and rescue teams, were called to assist the patient, Tracy Calitri, 61, of Danvers, MA.

“(The) investigation of the scene, along with witness and patient statements, revealed Calitri, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was traveling east on Newell Brook Road in a large group of OHRVs,” Levi Frye, a conservation officer, said. “Calitri said the sun was in her eyes, so in an attempt to shield it, she took one hand off her steering column. As she was traveling with one hand on the handlebars, she struck a rock in the trail.”

The ATV veered sharply to the left, and she was unable to control the vehicle, he said. She then struck another rock, which sent her and the ATV off the trail and into a tree, a report said.

Other riders gave Calitri aid and called for assistance. Errol’s UTV rescue unit drove her to an ambulance for treatment, but due to the injuries, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team helicopter was requested. She was picked up at the Berlin Airport and taken to Lebanon.

“The investigation of this crash has shown that operator inexperience and inattention are the leading factors in this crash,” Frye said. “Alcohol and drug intoxication are not considered factors in this incident.”

Frye said the department like to remind all operators to ride within their limits and be mindful of certain intrinsic hazards that come with operating OHRVs.
