Michigan Pilot Killed Flying Medical Supplies To New Hampshire

BEDFORD, NH — A pilot transporting medical supplies from New Jersey to New Hampshire died after the plane he was flying crashed in Bedford on Friday.

Emanuel Vomvolakis, 23, of Linden, Michigan, died after reporting the twin-engine plane was having engine problems just before landing at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport just after 11:30 p.m.

Police and fire and rescue teams from Bedford, Manchester, and other communities were sent to the crash along the banks of the Merrimack River near Technology drive after receiving multiple 911 calls. Officers were first to arrive and found the plane engulfed in flames. Firefighters then tackled both the burning plane and the woods around the crash scene.

Police secured the scene and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified.

The plane was operated by Castle Air, a Canton, Ohio-based company, and was transporting medical supplies. The flight originated at the Essex County New Jersey Airport and was expected to land at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport before crashing. Vomvolakis, according to Police Chief John Bryfonski of the Bedford Police Department, reported engine trouble just before the crash.

Bryfonski also requested residents and the general public to avoid the Bedford Heritage Trail until further notice.

Vomvolakis, according to his LinkedIn profile, had been a pilot and flight instructor since 2018.
