CONCORD, NH — One of the first potential Republican presidential candidates to announce a 2024 run was in Concord to meet with city GOP committee members.

Former Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton, a Navy veteran and musician, came to the city to meet with voters and discuss his effort. During his talk with about two dozen city Republicans, the candidate spoke about paying a forward — a theme of his race, imploring Americans to shift focus from ourselves to future generations, especially regarding the federal debt, now at more than $31 trillion, with more than $1 trillion in annual interest.

The candidate is in his mid-50s and has degrees in engineering, political science, and financial services. He is divorced with four children.

Stapleton served eight years as the secretary of state in Montana and is also a former state senator, too.

In 2012 he ran for governor but lost. A year later, he ran for the open Senate seat after the retirement of Max Baucus but withdrew to run for Congress. He lost in the GOP primary that year. In 2020, he ran for Congress but was unsuccessful in the primary.

According to Andrew Georgevits, the city committee will be inviting as many Republican 2024 first-in-the-nation presidential primary candidates as it can to meet with GOP primary voters.
