More Of Concord’s Homeless Rescued From A Rising Merrimack River

Three homeless people were rescued on Friday after requesting help from their campsites between the Merrimack River and Interstate 93.

CONCORD, NH — For the second time in 48 hours, Concord fire and rescue teams were called to the Merrimack River to rescue homeless campers from rising flood waters.

Around 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Capital Region Fire Dispatch began receiving calls about homeless campers trapped by water along the banks of the river due to rising water levels. Firefighters launched a boat and sent EMTs to the area of Basin Street. This time, according to scanner chatter, firefighters knew the location of the homeless who needed assistance due to the coordinates provided by a cell phone.

The battalion chief also requested Concord police to the scene.

There was some discussion about whether firefighters would use an inflatable raft or the fire boat. Later, they decided to stick to the fire boat.

Around 4:45 p.m., two homeless campers were found in need of assistance. At just before 5 p.m., the fire commander said three campers were being transported by the boat to Basin Street.

It is unknown at post time whether the homeless campers were the same ones trapped on Thursday who returned to their camps or they were new campers who did not need rescuing on Thursday but did on Friday.
