CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire State Police are reminding the public that residents, commuters, and visitors to the Granite State can avoid catastrophe by being responsible and following a number of simple steps to remain safe. Thanksgiving is the busiest traveled holiday of the year, noted Capt. Jeffrey Ladieu of the New Hampshire State Police, and with the increase in traffic, it was "extremely important" to remind drivers to be responsible this holiday season. Responsible drivers, he said, will "keep themselves and everyone’s family and loved ones safe" on New Hampshire's roads.

"It’s important to remember that most crashes during the holiday season are related to impairment," Ladieu said.

State police advised planning ahead, designating a sober driver, handing your keys to someone who is sober, or calling a friend, taxi, or Uber or Lyft to get safe transportation if you're impaired. In some areas of the state, public transportation and "sober rides programs" are also available.

Distracted driving can also cause accidents.

"Put down your phone or other electronics," added Ladieu. "Keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road to remain focused at all times."

Wearing seatbelts and obeying the speed limit are also advised.

"Prevention and saving lives are always our top priorities and we need everyone’s assistance and vigilance during this busy holiday season," he said. "We are asking for the public’s help in partnering to keep our roadways safe while enjoying the holiday."
