NH Man Pleads Guilty To Firearm Charges

Jody Swett of Weare, formerly of Nashua, purchased guns in 2016 but is prohibited from owning them due to a domestic violence conviction.

CONCORD, NH — A New Hampshire man who is prohibited from owning a firearm pleaded guilty to charges on July 17, 2017, after being arrested earlier this year. Jody Swett, 31, of Weare, is due to be sentenced in October on three counts of possessing multiple firearms and ammunition as a prohibited person. Back in April 2015, Swett pleaded guilty to two domestic violence charges for grabbing his son, 9, by the face and pushing his son, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

At the time, he was living in Nashua. The conviction means Swett can’t legally possess firearms or ammunition in the state.

During private transactions in 2016, though, he purchased a Ruger, in July, and a shotgun and bullet proof vest in October of that year. In February of this year, the FBI raided Swett’s home in Weare and seized two .22 caliber rifles, a 9 mm pistol, and more than 100 rounds of ammo.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to combat violent crime,” said acting-U.S. Attorney Farley in a statement. “When individuals possess firearms unlawfully they present a risk to the safety of the community. We will continue to prosecute those who possess weapons unlawfully and to use all available means to reduce the risk of violent crime here in New Hampshire.”

Swett, the Union Leader noted, was also convicted of simple assault in October 2016, for punching a teenager – the son of his girlfriend at the time – in Nashua.
