NH Woman, Girl Injured After Head-On With Alleged Drunk Driver

Joseph Mays of Keene was arrested on a felony DWI charge last night after allegedly striking a Peterborough woman's Honda Fit on Route 202.

CONCORD, NH — A New Hampshire woman sustained life threatening injuries after a head-on crash on Route 202 last night, according to state police. Arrested after the crash on Nov. 10, 2017, was Joseph Mays, 29, of Keene, for aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony. According to the New Hampshire State Police, Hancock Police and Fire and Rescue teams were sent to a head-on collision on Route 202 at just after 6:30 p.m.

Due to the serious nature of the crash, the New Hampshire State Police-Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to assist with the investigation. Sgt. Steven Wheeler of the NHSP alleged that Mays was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla east when his vehicle allegedly crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a Honda Fit, being driven by a 33-year-old woman from Peterborough.

Both Mays and the woman sustained life-threatening injuries. Mays was medflighted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, where he was later charged. The woman was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough then transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

A 3-year-old girl who was in a child safety seat in the rear of the Fit was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough then transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“At this time, it appears that alcohol may have been factors in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation,” Wheeler stated.
