CONCORD, NH — A man from Northfield with active warrants on assault and criminal trespass charges in Franklin is facing felony and other charges after an incident in the southern part of the city.

Around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, an officer at the Speedway on Hall Street heard someone yelling for help “multiple times.” They exited the cruiser and saw a man running toward the gas station and bleeding heavily from the mouth. The man said another man had assaulted him with a hatchet and had taken his bicycle.

The other man appeared in the area and began walking toward the gas station. The man was grunting and yelling expletives, had his fists balled up, and was walking toward the complainant.

The officer ordered the man to stop, and the man turned toward the officer and became calm and reserved.

“Oh,” the man said, “you’re the police. No problem, sir, what would you like me to do?”

The officer claimed the man had red fists and appeared he had been involved in an altercation. The man, later identified as Roland J. Gagne, 26, of Diana Drive in Northfield, was placed in handcuffs while the officer could figure out what was going on, the affidavit said.

During questioning, Gagne denied being involved in a fight and said the bicycle was across the street, the report said.

“I passed it on my way here,” he said, according to the affidavit said.

The complainant, however, claimed Gagne had assaulted him with his fists and feet while also swinging a hatchet at him, the report said. Gagne was accused in the report of pulling off the rear wheel of the bicycle and stomping on it.

The officer went to the area of the incident and found a hatchet, a bicycle with the wheel removed, and parts that appeared to have been damaged due to being stomped on.

After being read his Miranda rights, Gagne was questioned again and “claimed to have no memory of the incident — yet was clear about his actions for the remainder of the night,” the affidavit said.

Later, the officer accused Gagne of trying to convince police he was actually his brother.

A check found he had two warrants out of Franklin District Court for simple assault with $485 cash to settle and $186 for criminal trespass, cash to settle, and he was arrested.

Gagne was charged with felony criminal threatening-deadly weapon, simple assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and false report to law enforcement, as well as the two bench warrants.
