If you ever doubted that pigs were smart, Charlotte is here to prove it. After weeks of looking we finally found a pig to send to the butcher. We made the appointment and Bruce was assigned to pick up the pig from Steve Normanton's Farm in Litchfield, NH. The pig Steve wanted to give us would not get in the trailer, but another one did. Bruce was 3 hours late for the butcher appointment so he brought the pig home to wait until we could re-schedule.
Today the 300 pound pig that jumped in our trailer is glad she did and we are too. It took just a couple of hours for her to snuggle her way into our hearts and acquire the name, Charlotte. During the day Charlotte has the run of the farm and welcomes visitors to our Farm Store. She runs along side the ATV when I do chores and has chased cars down the road, just like a dog. She is smart and friendly and mostly does as she is told, sometimes with a grunt or a squeal.
I am sure, from the moment she jumped in the trailer, she knew exactly what she needed to do to survive. She now shares her pen with a Scottish Highlander calf named Phoebe. I wonder if Charlotte is teaching Pheobe how to “Win Friends and Influence People?” It is obvious that Charlotte is an expert at winning the heart of everyone she meets.
