CONCORD, NH — Lottery officials said Tuesday that more than $1.4 million worth of Powerball tickets were sold in the state on Monday.

The jackpot for Wednesday is expected to be $1.2 billion — the second-highest Powerball jackpot in history and the fourth-largest lottery jackpot in history. Officials said the one-time cash payout would increase to $596.7 million before taxes.

Charlie McIntyre, the executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, called the jackpot a life-changing prize. He also said officials expected ticket sales to continue to be brisk up until the deadline.

“With this Powerball jackpot now well past the $1 billion mark, we know this is an exciting time for our players, but we also want to take this opportunity to encourage our players to play responsibly,” McIntyre said. “Taking part in Powerball pools with friends and colleagues is a great way to responsibly experience the excitement and anticipation of the game. Remember, you have to play to win, but it only takes one to win.”

Officials said a $50,000 winning ticket was sold at the Big Apple on the White Mountain Highway in Ossipee for Monday's Powerball drawing.
