Puzzling Politics in Ward 3

A number of voters have the signs of more than one candidate on their lawns.

It was once said that politics makes strange bedfellows, and if you’re out and about in Ward 3 in Concord during the next few weeks, you’re going to see some schizophrenic lawn sign set-ups.

Specifically, on more than a handful of lawns in the western part of the city, you’ll see signs for both Jan McClure, the Ward 3 incumbent councilor, and Rick Cibotti, one of two challengers running for the seat. Ward 2 Councilor Jennifer Kretovic, who will be redistricted into Ward 3 in January, is also seeking to serve the ward.

There is, however, only one seat, which means all those folks who have dual (or duel, if you will) yard signs are going to need to make a final choice come November between one or the other. While signs don't vote, they are an indication of a campaign's potential support in the community before an election. The appearance of dual signs makes the politics of the race a little puzzling.

Cibotti is offering a patriotic motif with his signs – all red, white and blue. Kretovic’s signs are blue, with a futuristic red swirl across the sign.

McClure, however, actually has two signs – the ones she has used in previous election cycles, with white lettering on a red background, and new ones that state, “I Stand With Jan,” a clear message that she and her supporters are attempting to fend off the two challengers.

It is unknown whether the voters who have both Cibotti and McClure signs will ultimately “stand with Jan” or not though. Election Day in Concord is Tuesday, Nov. 5, or a little more than three weeks away. We'll all find out then.
