Concord’s Neighborhood Street Paving Program begins next week with GMI Asphalt as the City’s paving contractor for this year.

Streets anticipated for paving this spring and summer include pavement reclamation on Broad Avenue, Cote Street, Fellow Street, Haig Street, Hope Avenue, Kellom Street, Nivelle Street, and Wood Avenue.

Pavement reclamation includes breaking up the road, recycling the existing base material and gravel road base, and compacting the product to create a strong base foundation before applying new pavement. The process includes lowering all catch basin and manhole covers, grinding the road surface to a 1’ depth, grading the road, and putting down a base layer of pavement. Utility covers are then reset, gravel shoulder work is completed in areas without any curbing, and a final pavement overlay is applied.

Road maintenance will also include cold planing and overlaying streets, including Capitol Street from Green Street to North State Street, Green Street from School Street to Capitol Street (100’ each way), North State Street from School St. to Capitol Street (100’ each way), and School Street from Green Street to State Street.

Cold planing and overlaying involve lowering utility covers, removing the top pavement layer with a milling machine to remove road damage, shimming with a layer of pavement to fill any ruts, resetting covers, and then placing a 1” final overlay of pavement. The new layer of asphalt strengthens the existing pavement.

Work will begin Monday, April 13, on Nivelle Street, Haig Street, and Cote Street. Work is weather permitting and is subject to change. Streets may be reduced to one lane or closed to through traffic. Residential access will be permitted. Parking will be prohibited on these streets between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Preserving road conditions is essential for maintaining durable, safe, and efficient roadways, which enhances the community’s quality of life. The City performs an assessment of road conditions every 2 years to prioritize paving for streets that need repair. Roads are scheduled for paving based on pavement conditions, frequency of use, and available funding.

Residents who have a concern or paving request for a particular street can submit a request at www.concordnh.gov/seeclickfix or through the MyConcordNH app.
