DOVER, NH — A man from Salem is facing numerous charges after being accused of drunken driving and fleeing police from Dover to Epsom Wednesday.

Just after midnight, New Hampshire State Police received a report about a Nissan Versa fleeing from Dover police on Indian Brook Drive. Around 1:15 a.m., troopers spotted the vehicle parked at the Lee traffic circle. But when the driver, later identified as James R. Allen, 58, of Salem, saw the troopers, he was accused of accelerating out of a parking lot, and back onto Route 4, Amber Lagace, a public information officer for the state police, said.

“A pursuit was initiated for the length of Route 4, westbound, through several local jurisdictions,” she said. “During the vehicle pursuit, the Nissan continuously traveled at an excessive rate of speed and failed to properly maintain a single lane of travel.”

After entering Northwood, police deployed a tire deflation device, attempting to stop the vehicle. But even after that, Lagace said, he was accused of continuing to drive. Allen, she said, drove into Epsom until he got to the Epsom traffic circle.”

“With deflated tires,” Lagace said, “the operator entered an empty parking lot and exited the vehicle. Rather than immediately surrendering, the driver attempted to flee on foot.”

A trooper and K-9 partner “Ida” were able to find Allen and arrest him.

Allen was charged with felony reckless conduct, two aggravated driving under the influence, DUI, resisting arrest or detention, and two disobeying officer charges. He was held and arraigned in Rockingham County Superior Court.

“Several agencies were able to work together to bring this event to a safe and successful resolution,” she said adding state police offered thanks to Dover, Northwood, and Epsom police for their assistance in resolving the matter.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Sergeant Gary Wood Jr. at Gary.J.WoodJr@dos.nh.gov.
