State Police Injured on I-89

Collisions on highways injured troopers, damaged vehicles.

During yesterday’s storm, numerous vehicles crashed into New Hampshire State Police vehicles on highways around the state, according to reports.

Three cruisers were struck by passing motorists on I-89 alone while troopers were performing their duties and attempting to assist other drivers and investigate collisions.

“The collisions, all of which occurred while the cruisers were stationary, to the sides of the roadway and while fully illuminated with emergency blue lights, occurred in the towns of Hopkinton and Springfield,” said Sgt. Charles Johnston in a statement. “Two of the three cruisers sustained major damage and had to be towed from the roadway. Two Troopers sustained minor injuries, with one ultimately getting transported to New London Hospital for evaluation.”

Lt. Christopher Vetter stated in a press release last night that two other police cruisers were struck in different parts of the state.

“If you must drive, please do so with extreme care, and give yourself added time to make it to your destination,” he said. “Also, please use caution when approaching and passing emergency vehicles should you encounter them upon the highway.”

New Hampshire has had a move over law on the books since 2005, for emergency vehicles, including state troopers and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. The law requires motorists to slow down and steer clear of all emergency vehicles in breakdown lanes and accident scenes.
